Embroidered doilies and wood
My artist practice interprets the internal struggle of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Through themes of nature and home, my work focuses on the intrinsic need to feel connected. Growing up in rural Canada, I know that I can also find peace in the outdoors whenever I feel lost. These ideas are usually portrayed in my work through a narrative as I rely on story telling to share my feelings.
My practice also utilizes traditional methods of women’s work such as embroidery, sewing, and weaving in a contemporary manner to bridge the past with the present. Within my work, intention is portrayed through the intricate detail and beauty is found in the seemingly ordinary as I cherish everything that reminds me of home. By referring to familiar objects or symbols my work reflects feelings of nostalgia, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future.
